This is an impressive and huge piece, measuring over 45 cm!Depicted is a priestly figure, standing with his feet slightly apart and his arms spread wide, the hands opened with palms up, as if addressing a crowd or, more likely, addressing the gods in prayer or adoration.His face is smoothly rendered with the mouth open, exposing the top row of teeth. He wears a floor-length skirt and an elaborate headdress which appears wrapped around his head. A necklace, consisting of two parallel strings of beads, can be seen around his neck. In addition he wears large ear spools.This majestic figure was published by Arte Primitivo and illustrated on the front cover of their catalogue.Buff earthenware, Veracruz, Remojadas, Mexico, ca. 600-900 C.E. The head and arms have been reattached with restoration of one hand and two fingers as well as a few parts of the layered headdress and one nipple; a few smaller parts from the headdress missing.
